An AI companion feels continuous when it recalls the right detail at the right time. The harder question is whether you can see, correct and remove what it remembers.
What memory actually means
Recent conversation context and long-term memory are different. Recent context helps a reply follow the current exchange. Long-term memory carries selected details into later visits: a name, a preference, a boundary or a choice you made together. Relationship continuity adds another layer by preserving shared plans and scenes without treating every sentence as permanent.
Four things to test in any AI companion
- Specific recall: Does it remember a concrete preference days later without inventing extra details?
- Separation: Do different characters keep their own context instead of leaking details between conversations?
- Correction: Can you change a mistaken memory without restarting the entire relationship?
- Deletion: Can you remove the source message and anything the system derived from it?

Can I stop Elsewhere from remembering one message?
Yes. Every message has a control that keeps the conversation visible while excluding that message from memory. You can also delete a message and the memories derived from it.
Does deleting a chat delete its memories?
